High School Honors
The Foundation awards high school honors scholarships to deserving seniors who have attended a public high school or qualified charter school in Bay, Gulf, or Franklin counties. High School Honors scholarship recipients receive a two (2) year scholarship and an award payout that is 35% more than a general scholarship award. The High School Honors scholarship application is processed through an applicant’s AcademicWorks account.
To apply an applicant must follow these requirements:
- Must have a “weighted” grade point of 4.0 or higher.
- Must have a recommendation from a senior adviser/counselor
- Must be senior graduate of good academic standing.
- Must have applied and been accepted to GCSC.
- Must write an essay.
- Complete and submit an application between December 1st and March 15th.
High School Honors Application and Selection Process
Applications for the Foundation’s High School Honors scholarship can be found inside a general application in a student’s electronic scholarship file.
The honors scholarship application process is more involved than other applications. However the rewards are greater. The Foundation recommends that an applicant start the honors application process at least 4 weeks before the deadline of March 15th. Once inside the honors application, you will be asked to complete the following application steps:
- Ask your senior adviser/counselor for their school email address;
- Submit your request inside your high school application;
- Tell your adviser/counselor you have sent a reference request;
- Answer the following 2018-2019 essay questions:
Who in your life has been your biggest influence and why?
If you had the authority to change your school in a positive way, what specific changes would you make?
What defines you as an honors student?
SENIOR ADVISER/COUNSELOR REQUESTS
One of the most important steps in the application process is sending a reference request to your senior guidance counselor/adviser. No application will be consider without a reply from an applicants’ senior adviser/counselor. References will not be accepted from: a family member, employer, or any other organization. Applicants WILL NOT receive confirmation that a request has been submitted. We recommend that all applicants keep in contact with their senior adviser/counselor and receive a confirmation from him/her. PLEASE NOTE: The Foundation advises that all reference requests be sent out 2-3 weeks before the application deadline.
High School Honors scholarship recipients are selected by a committee comprised of faculty and staff of GCSC. All applications are reviewed, scored, and ranked. Selections are made based on the ranking. The High School Honors scoring committee reserves the right to select as many qualified candidates as deemed necessary. The scoring committee will not pre-designate scholarship slots to every school. Since the selection is based on rankings, the number of recipients chosen from any one school may vary.
High School Honors scholarship recipients will be recognized by the Foundation. The Foundation will be responsible for notifying the high school guidance office if a recipient is chosen from their high school.
High School Honors scholarship recipients will not be considered for any of the Foundation’s general scholarships (Committee Select). High School Honors awards are renewable for an extra year provided the recipient is still attending GCSC, maintains a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and is a student in good standing.
Students from the following schools are allowed to apply for High School Honors scholarships: A. Crawford Mosley High School, Bay High School, Bay Virtual School, Deane Bozeman School, Franklin County School, J.R. Arnold High School, North Bay Haven Charter Academy, Port St. Joe High School, Rutherford High School, and Wewahitchka High School.
